About KBI UX

An incubator where digitally disadvantaged language communities and interaction design shape each other.

While thousands of languages and scripts are spoken and written around the world, only a fraction are represented in contemporary digital media and reflected in interaction design. KBI (Donald Knuth & Charles Bigelow UX Incubator) exists to support practitioners working to revitalize endangered and underrepresented writing systems, ensuring that these scripts have a living, functional presence in today’s digital landscape.

KBI’s mission is to provide equitable access to specialized training, mentorship, and resources that are often inaccessible to designers outside established industry or academic networks. By offering tuition-free participation, expert-led workshops, and software support, the incubator creates a space where designers from diverse backgrounds can develop projects rooted in rigorous research and cultural knowledge.

KBI UX is built as a cohort-based experience that supports linguists, programmers, and emerging UX practitioners through guidance, applied research, and collaborative critique. The work centers on community relevance, language vitality, and ethical digital practice.
